Founded in 1984, this decades-old museum has become one of the most widely appreciated and visited sites in the desert city of Jaisalmer. Situated just along the banks of Gadisar Lake in the heart of the Mehar Bagh garden, this museum was erected by NK Sharma as a way to showcase the Rajput heritage and culture of Jaisalmer and its royal historical past.
Sharma collected a host of items for the museum, including personal favorites like coins, old paintings, artifacts, and manuscripts. Gradually he began to collect items from other places as well, eventually expanding into costumes, photography, jewelry, paintings, fossils, and camel ornaments. All artifacts represent the culture and royal past of Jaisalmer, giving insight into previous rulers and lives of the ancient people.
Visitors can purchase tickets to the museum, which will allow them entry into the nearby Desert Culture Centre and Museum as well.
